The Murder Puzzle (2026) Review: A Decent Time-Pass Mystery With Underwhelming Bromance

When I first heard about The Murder Puzzle, I was hoping for two things: an engaging crime thriller and a memorable bromance between the two leads. The premise certainly sounded promising. The story follows Deputy Captain Li Kaiyang and his reluctant apprentice Jiang Han as they investigate a string of disturbing murder cases, only to uncover a much larger conspiracy tied to decades-old secrets.

Unfortunately, while the drama is perfectly watchable, it never quite reaches the heights it seems to promise.

The Mystery Falls Into Familiar Territory

Let's put the bromance aside for a minute because, at its core, The Murder Puzzle is supposed to be a mystery thriller.

Sadly, this is where the drama disappointed me the most.

The investigation starts off with enough intrigue to make you curious, but as the episodes progress, it becomes increasingly predictable. Many of the twists rely on familiar crime-drama clichés, and instead of constantly surprising me, I often found myself guessing where the story was heading long before the characters did.

That's not to say the mystery is terrible. It's simply... average.

The pacing also doesn't help. There were several stretches where the investigation felt repetitive, and instead of building suspense, the story occasionally dragged. For a genre that's supposed to keep you on the edge of your seat, I found myself checking how many episodes were left.

If you're an avid mystery fan who's watched plenty of detective dramas, chances are you've seen most of these story beats before.

The Cast and Acting

The performances are... fine.

Nobody gives a performance so bad that it ruins the show, but I also never had that moment where I thought, "Wow, this actor completely stole the scene."

The cast does what the script asks of them, but there isn't much emotional depth for them to elevate. As a result, most characters end up feeling serviceable rather than memorable.

It's one of those dramas where you'll probably remember the cases more than the performances.

What About the Bromance?

Now, the part most readers of this blog probably care about.

Honestly?

It's okay.

If you're expecting something on the level of Archives: The Nanyang Mystery, Cases Between Us, or Zhan Zhao Adventures, you should probably lower your expectations.

The chemistry between the two leads exists, but it never develops into something particularly compelling. There are two scenes that genuinely stood out to me and reminded me why I was interested in the drama in the first place. Those moments had the emotional connection and partnership I wanted to see throughout the series.

Unfortunately, the rest of the drama doesn't really build on them.

The bromance ends up feeling more like a nice bonus than one of the drama's defining strengths.

Should You Watch It?

I wouldn't call The Murder Puzzle a must-watch.

At the same time, I don't regret watching it either.

This is the definition of a weekend binge. If you've already finished the stronger mystery dramas this year and simply want something to pass the time, you could easily finish this in one sitting without feeling like you've wasted your day.

Just don't go into it expecting groundbreaking mysteries or unforgettable character dynamics.

Final Verdict

Rating: 7/10

Pros

  • Easy to binge

  • A couple of genuinely enjoyable bromance moments

  • Decent production quality

  • Watchable from beginning to end

Cons

  • Predictable mystery

  • Relies heavily on familiar crime-drama clichés

  • Average acting

  • Bromance never reaches its full potential

In the end, The Murder Puzzle is a perfectly decent time-pass drama. It doesn't do anything offensively bad, but it also doesn't give me many reasons to recommend it over the stronger detective bromance dramas that came out this year.

If you have nothing else on your watchlist and you're in the mood for an uncomplicated crime thriller with a sprinkle of bromance, give it a shot. Otherwise, there are better options out there.
